What's My "All-Time" Favorite Movie? Twister!

You may have noticed that I have recently replaced the Scream theme with a new one: Twister. Twister has to be number 1 on my lists of favorite movies. This, however, is not the main reason of my plastering it all over my blog. Last Friday, April 14 marked the "unofficial" official day of Tornado season. This may not be as exciting if you don't live in Tornado Alley... However, I do. When I was six years old, this movie was released. And every play day after seeing the film my brother, sister, and I filled with our imaginations with nothing but tornado chasing. So in lieu of the season and Twister being my all-time favorite movie, I'm going to keep this theme up until Wednesday...

We're expecting storms here tomorrow, so you can imagine how excited I am right about now!

SCRE4M: A Great Thriller

I walk into the theaters already worried that the original cast will be killed off. The movie opens with scenes from "Stab 6" & "7" and ending with two local high-school victims stabbed to death in Woodsboro. This happens the night before Sidney returns to her hometown... So is she the killer? That was my first thought. The film didn't waste any time getting into the chaos. Instantly, Sidney is thrown into the mix when evidence from the brutal murders the night before ends up in the trunk of her car... Taking this as a warning, she starts to fear for her life and those of her Aunt and younger cousin (new characters introduced in '4'). Her cousin, played by Emma Roberts, then receives a call from the killer, which then in return, forces the Sheriff (Dewey) to order a protective detail on Sidney's family... As you can assume, this "protection" was virtually ineffective.


This is about as much of the story as I'll give... I'm not one to give a way the plots and endings... so to tell you what you may want to know, the movie introduces a whole slew of new characters (Emma Robert's friends) as a new generation. Sidney, Dewey, & Gale all are all in the movie as well and are confronted with the masked killer, but the whole movie plays upon the notion "Do you f*ck with the originals?" As Sidney asks ghostface in the movie "Do you have the guts?"... this was the basic theme of my night... I didn't care about the new kids- I cared about the original cast. I knew it was a possibility they may get killed off, so I was on the edge of my seat the whole time wondering if Wes Craven (Director) was going to allow the main characters to be slaughtered.


So do they get killed? And who's the killer? You'll just have to go see the movie. One question I can answer: Is it worth watching? Absolutely. You may have watched all three other movies and realized how "sucky" the last one may have been... well, the fourth installment is probably almost as good as the original, in my opinion. It may not have been that great if it was the first of the series... but because it was the fourth movie, I believe the intentions of the film were mostly for the fans- making it gut-wrenching and nail-biting as ever.

So, if you liked the first Scream, then you'll definitely like the 4th. And be prepared for your socks to be knocked off, because there are some pretty huge shockers (I won't tell). And as the only spoiler of the night: Scream 5 has already been contracted... so maybe we'll see more of our favorite characters... or just more of the new ones... :) You'll just have to go see it!

So, what should I rate the movie... on Flixter, I gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars, so I'll stick with that. Hope you go see it, and hope you enjoy it.

Scream 3

Scream 2: A necessary sequel.

Hello Scream Fans!

Below, I have embedded Scream 2. Just a few words about this film: Don't expect it to be as good as the first. It's a great sequel no doubt, but whenever you mix college kids with horror, the atmosphere or "aesthetic" of the movie turns more to stupidity. Nevertheless, I love the movie, and I'm sure you'll like it as well (if you can get past the girls running UP the stairs instead of out the door for help).

Scary Movie Mania: Scream 4

It's no shock that I love horror movies... Last Halloween, I designed my whole blog around scary movies. This week, I've done something similar: I designed the blog around an up and coming movie, Scream 4.

Let me tell you why I'm excited. Like Toy Story, the 'Scream' movies are a trilogy, or quadrilogy now, that my generation has grown up with. "Do you wanna play a game" has to be one of the most well-known movie quotes out there... and the concept of the movie was absolutely original... it gave my friends and many other people a great line to drop when prank calling people.


Ok, ok so a white-masked, knife-stabbing killer isn't so original (ref. Halloween), but in the creation of "Scream", a villain & costume was created as well, and was turned into one of the most recognizable faces/costumes out there. Here's the major difference between the two: Scream vs. Halloween. When Michael Meyers chases you, he walks. When "Ghostface" chases you, he runs!

Since I saw the first movie, Ghostface has been a returning character to many of my recurring nightmares. Even though the movie may not have been the scariest I've seen, just the thought of a hooded figure popping out of the dark and stabbing you right in the gut, sends chills down my spine.

+ the first 'Scream' did something many movies have failed to do in years. It accomplished an intro that people will remember for the rest of their lives. Forget Sidney Prescott and the rest of the cast, Drew Barrymore's thrilling intro instantly made Scream a favorite scary movie upon the first time I watched it. I'll tell you what, I bet there's wasn't one kid willing to be alone after watching that. This week's Entertainment Weekly magazine rated the first movie very highly compared to 2 & 3- I bet this is why. Furthermore, the same magazine a few weeks ago also referenced Drew Barrymore's performance in Scream and went on the say they believed that her career was re-boosted following her small role.

  • I'll embed all 3 "Scream" movies- The first starting this week, the second next week, etc.
  • On one of my next podcast episodes, I'll play some music from the first three movies.

My Spring Break Double Feature

Spring break just ended for me, and it pisses me off. No, nothing physically happened to "piss" me off. It's just the fact that my break is over. But... I was able to see 2 new movies. Lame right? Well going to the theaters just happens to be one of my favorite things to do. So what did I go see? "The Lincoln Lawyer" and "Red Riding Hood".


Here's my thoughts on "The Lincoln Lawyer":

It was EXCELLENT. I'm not a Matthew Mcconaughey fan... actually, one of my favorite movies which he plays in is "A Time To Kill" where he also portrays a lawyer. Anyways, in the movie, Matthew plays a pretty unliked lawyer who defends sketchy people from the rough side of L.A. He finds himself defending a guy (Ryan Phillippe) who is accused of assaulting a woman and attempting to kill her. The movie's not exactly a fast-paced movie, but it's very suspenseful. The whole movie will just keep you on your toes as it did for me. It was pretty unpredictable the whole way through. So, if you have a free night, definitely go see it! You wont be disappointed, I promise.



My thoughts on "Red Riding Hood":



It was okay, but don't go waste your money. It's a pretty neat portrayal of the tale, however it was just plain weird at some parts. The acting was good (I love Amanda Seyfried), but the plot was actually really boring. Apparently the director is the same director from one of the Twilight movies... so that may explain why the movie was kind of sucky. Other than that, the story is predictable. If you've read any of the Red Riding Hood stories, then the movie isn't too far from them. Overall, just wait until it comes out on Redbox. It'll be a good $1 rental. The only going for the movie is probably its soundtrack. Check it out on iTunes.

My favorite road-trip movie.

Last night, I entered in an Entertainment Weekly Facebook contest. It was quite simple- all I had to do was answer what I believed was the best road-trip movie. The prize? A free copy of "Due Date" on Blu Ray. It wasn't a big prize, but hey! it was free and easy to enter. I didn't win, but it made me think long and hard about which movie I thought was the best.

There were people entering "The Hangover" and "Star Wars" and "Toy Story 2"... all of which were quite ridiculous, except for Star Wars perhaps. There may not have been any 'roads' but I could consider that type of movie. Nevertheless, some people went on very thin stretches to try to come up with a unique answer. Those who went with the "of course" choices voted "Plains, Trains, & Automobiles", "Vacation", & probably the most answered was "Thelma & Louise"... all good choices, but none of which I thought was the BEST road-trip movie.

Here's what I consider when I'm thinking of the greatest "Road Trip" movie: 1) There has to be humor. If there's no humor, then why even go on a road trip. It's supposed to be about fun, and if the people in the movie aren't having fun, then neither is the audience. 2) It has to be dramatic. There has to be a confliction of some sorts. Some people like an easy-going movie with not-so-much suspense. I think there has to be a lot of suspense. 3) There has to be a goal. Going out and having fun is not a good movie to me. They have to be going somewhere- to a destination. I don't care if they make it or not, just as long as they try. 4) The characters have to grow. It doesn't necessarily have to be a "coming-of-age" movie, but they have to learn something or take something from the road trip.

So, out of these four things I pretty much always consider when I watch any movie (not just road trip movies) I come up with a huge list. Now, a lot of moves easily fit into all of those stipulations, however, I chose 2 of what I believe to be the greatest road trip movies. I won't write about them, but I'll post links to the movies.

#2: Thelma & Louise



#1: Wild America



"Wild America" has to be one of the greatest road trip movies of all time. If you haven't seen it, go check it out. It's not too old, but it'll make you laugh, perhaps cry at some point. But ultimately, you'll enjoy watching it.



'A' is for "The Adjustment Bureau"

Last Thursday, I was able to attend a pre-screening of "The Adjustment Bureau". I've thought it's looked interesting since I saw the preview for the movie over a month ago. It was a very interesting movie, actually. To be more clear, I really loved the movie. Matt Damon and Emily Blunt had perfect on-screen chemistry, and the whole plot and storyline was perfectly original.

Matt Damon plays a young politician that always finds himself in dark times, but still favored in the state of New York. Upon learning that his current election has been lost, he runs into an interesting woman he seems to instantly love. This led to a perfect speech and throws him as a front runner for the next elections. Since that night he met 'Emily' he can't stop thinking about her, but what he doesn't realize is that he isn't supposed to ever see her again... or his fate could go south. This is where 'The Adjustment Bureau' comes in. They're quite supernatural; they control, or help guide people to their rightful fates. The only thing they can't control is luck or chance. And by chance, Matt Damon ran into his love, Emily once more. This triggered a rippling affect on the fates of many people.

By now, the 'Bureau' has to try to steer him on a path without Emily, or their alternative is to erase the politician's mind. Matt Damon has other plans, though, and ultimately sets out to prove the Bureau, and whoever's controlling everyone's destiny, wrong.

I found the movie very compelling and very fast-paced. Every scene was a surprise because I could never predict what was going to happen. So, would I recommend you going to see this movie when it comes out? Absolutely. It comes out in theaters March 4th. 





The Rite... Was 'Right' On!

I'm a horror fanatic. You can probably tell by how much I love Halloween. Nevertheless, a new movie sparked my interest recently. To say the least, I wasn't really sure what The Rite was about. I saw a glimpse of the previews which showed Anthony Hopkins as a preist and was set in Rome. That enough was all it took for me to head over to the theater. And to be specifically clear, this movie wasn't a horror, but it very well could be- it just depends on the person.

When the movie started, it was a little creepy. A young boy whose father was a mortician? Not what I was expecting... but that led to the boy entering the priesthood as an adult. The man was quite a skeptic for a priest (or potential priest) and caught the eyes of his superiors. They sent him to the vatican as a "last chance" mission to test his faith, more or less. He was to attend classes on exorcisms. 

Quickly, the vatican realized his skepticisms and decided to send him to a local "legend" in the exorcism professions, Father Lucas. Lucas, played by Hopkins, is a normal- quite humorous priest who, what seemed like a daily basis, performed exorcists on local civilians.


From then on, the young skeptic, Kovak, is tested in his faith and ultimately faces the horrific demon who has been possessing the locals, only to find out that it's ultimate target is...?

To shortly review the movie: It starts off very interesting, but definitely fast pasted. It maybe takes Lucas 15 minutes of the movie to get to The Vatican. Twenty minutes before you witness the first exorcist. Even though this is not what I was expecting the movie to be about, although now when I fully watch the previews it specifically portrays exorcisms, it was Excellent. I've seen them all- The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Possession, The Last Exorcist, to name a few, and I haven't been impressed with either of them. None of the movies have seemed realistic, but this one did. There was no head spinning- all the way, that is. No impossible bodily positions. It was basic- but visually terrifying.

I wouldn't classify this as a Horror movie, but as a Thriller. So if you are up for a good Thriller than definitely go see The Rite. If seeing a movie about exorcisms that is based on true events scares the hell out of you, then this movie will scare the hell out of you. The movie is based on true facts, and does say so in the beginning and end of the film. Also, both of the priests in the movie are based on real people and are still living today. Go check them out- and the movie too!



The Tourist... bad critic reviews that I totally disagree with!

This past weekend, I had the fortunate surprise of being taken to see The Tourist. Dispite the reviews I've seen from major film critics, I have to disagree. I thought the film was actually quite good. It was full of action, drama, excitement- everything it promoted!

The movie starts off with a famous criminal's girlfriend (Jolie) who is being tailed by Interpol. She mysteriously gets a letter from her con boyfriend telling her to get on a train to Venice and find a guy to make Interpol believe "the tourist" is her actual boyfriend to throw them off his tail.

From that point forward Depp and Jolie are thrown through numerous obstacles, and try to survive the Venetion police and an angry mob boss.

All in all, I really like the movie. I didn't love it, but it was still good. So if you are looking for a good action move with the beautiful Angelina Jolie and the brute Johnny Depp, then you'll like this movie too!



Harry Potter: almost done... unfortunately

Finally, I have seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1, and to sum it all up: it was great! The movie actually followed the book quite closely- minus a few details such as disguising Harry at the Weasley wedding… and introducing Dobby a little early.  The special effects were amazing as well. 

The film starts at Privet Dr. where Harry must travel to the Weasleys. However, since he is still underage, he must do it under the protection of the Order. From the first minute of the film, the pace hastens quicker and quicker.  There is no slow parts of the film. From George (or Fred- I can never remember) getting his ear blown off to Hedwig dying, you'll be on the edge of your seats. And as Voldemort blows open Dumbledore's grave only to steal the Elder Wand, the movie ends. A huge cliffhanger, but at least you know the end is coming.

This movie had a little bit more magic… but a lot less Hogwarts. If you have read the book, then you realize that the majority of the book is the trio looking for Voldemort's horcruxes (outside of Hogwarts).

So, if you haven't seen it: GO SEE IT. You will not be disappointed. 






I Solemnly Swear I'm Up To No Good.

This week, the penultimate  Harry Potter franchise continues with it's 7th movie installment.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 has already been hyped beyond belief. Over 3 different teaser trailers have been released, each showing more and more of the storyline- but carefully not spoiling any plot that may differ from the book.  Everyone who's read the Harry Potter novels know how the story ends, but I'm anxious to find out the point in which Part 1 ends and Part 2 of 'Deathly Hallows' begins.

If you don't remember what happened in the previous movie [Half-Blood Prince] I have posted a link so you can watch the movie online.  Anyways, with the death of Dumbledore, Harry decided that returning to Hogwarts was not an option, and that his destiny to destroy "You-know-who" must be put into action.

I've just recently completed re-reading the last book, and once again, J.K. Rowling energized my passion and love for the series. I just hope the movie follows the book very closely. Any detail that they omit from the film would drastically take away from the audiences' experience. Furthermore, shall they show the flash forward of the main characters Ron, Hermione, and Harry, I wonder if they will do so in the same manner as the book. Fifteen years, if I'm correct, is quite a long jump, and if they jump that far ahead, will they use Emma, Rupert, and Daniel still? Just a wonderment to think about.

Anyways, my podcast is strictly going to cover Harry Potter though the years, so tune in tomorrow for that. Otherwise, look through the changing banner on the home page to see some features for Harry Potter [The 6th Movie, Mugglenet, The Official Website, etc].

Also, because of the Thanksgiving holiday, I'll be putting my computer down for the week, so there will be no blog post from me, unless I decide to "attempt" to post one from my phone. Other than that, you can correctly assume that my next post will be a review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1

Well, Paranormal Activity 2 was awesome! ... If only I didn't shit myself.

It definitely lived up to my expectations.

On October 8, 2006, Katie and Micah’s paranormal activities climaxed when Katie mysteriously becomes possessed and ultimately murders Micah and…

That’s right. What happens after the incident that night? Where does Katie go? And why is this all happening anyway? The new sequel has all, scratch that, most of the answers.  I’ll try not to spoil anything for anyone; however, with as secretive the previews have been with the storyline, I may have already. Anyways, you could say this movie is a prequel to the first. Shit! Was that another spoiler? The ‘activity’ actually starts with this family from PA2, which happens to be close relatives to the original Katie. So throughout the film, we see cameos of Micah and Katie, taking into account this is happening a good three months before the activity in their home. Without getting into any more detail, the suspense that captivated many people in the first movie is just as intense in this movie.

Nonetheless, the movie may seem a bit boring in the beginning. The object this movie lacked that the other had is simply the great transitioning from one act of ‘activity’ to another. PA2 starts out extremely slow. Instead of building up the acts of paranormal events, it seems to be minimal, be minimal, be minimal, and then BAM, BAM, BAM; if that made any sense at all. The first film seemed to transition every event as if they got more intense every time. This one was either huge at first, small the next… or just small events throughout, then all of the huge events in the end. Either way, this new movie was scary as hell. I went and saw the midnight showing, with an 8:30 class the next morning… Even though I may be as tired as hell right now, I have no regrets. It was exactly what I was waiting for.

A new look on the franchise made this film even scarier than the first, and this is how: first, there’s a dog. I mean, we all know dogs and sense things we cannot, which really increase the scare factor. Second, the plot surrounds a family, not just a couple. Third, the house is huge and includes security cameras in EVERY room. So, instead of only seeing things with a guy carrying a camera or just through a tripod set up in a bedroom, or hearing something in a room and having to watch Micah run into another room so we can see the after affect, we get to see everything first-hand. And lastly, the factor I believe makes the movie the scariest, is the baby! Yes, we’ve all heard that innocent little children and see things adults can’t, and this movie plays with that idea. And it doesn’t help that the child can’t fight for himself… especially when he’s getting dragged out of his crib…

So if you want to be scared shitless. Go see this movie! It’s definitely the best horror film of this year. And I believe that the two Paranormal Activities are definitely the greatest horror films of all time. What you don’t see is what’s the scariest to me. And take my advice, don’t go see this movie during the day… it takes away from the after-affect. Go see it at night, so when you go home, you can imagine a demon coming for you with every sound you hear.



"Easy A" Is Simply... An Easy 'A'.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing ‘Easy A’. And when I say “pleasure”, it was exactly that. Emma Stone captivated me when she played the ultimate geeky sorority girl in The House Bunny. Then she had another break role as a badass woman in Zombieland; now, an outstanding role in Easy A. To tell you the truth, she’s going to be huge if she keeps choosing these great roles (as she has already been doing).

Easy A is about a student [Stone] who is just an ordinary, somewhat boring girl in her high school. Until she pretends to sleep with a guy as a favor, she is unnoticed. Word starts spreading on how Stone helped the guy out, so other pathetic-type guys start lining up to Stone with hopes that she’ll, at least, lie about having slept with them. Once rumors start spreading about her “indecency”, as Amanda Bynes categorizes Stone’s behavior in the film, the whole school starts to backlash and attack Emma. So in the end, Stone has to make the ultimate decision: Tell everyone that she’s been lying about sleeping around, or let the past be the past and just move on from there.

This story is a typical 80’s type movie, brought to the future in today’s 21st Century cinema. The movie really touches the idea of Stone’s situation being a typical “John Hughes” storyline, which perhaps may be true. All in all though, this movie was greatly entertaining. Lisa Kudrow was featured in the movie, and what can go wrong when our ‘Phoebe’ is in the picture?… well a lot of things, especially if she plays a troublesome social worker, as she does in Easy A.

The cast is great and the humor is astonishing. The A-List cast really takes this movie to the next level. Maybe it’s because I find myself in a younger demographic, but I loved this movie. A friend, my brother, and I all went and saw it together, and we found ourselves laughing so hard we started to cry. So I genuinely recommend seeing this movie if you haven’t already.

This movie could have easily been named based off of the ratings of all of the factors that bring the film together. It is simply an ‘Easy A’.



Resident Evil: Afterlife... is... brilliant!

I love watching movies. It’s my favorite pastime. So out of ALL of the movies I’ve watched- which is my favorite? This is one answer I’ll never be able to give. There are movies that I can fully recite from memory, Twister, being one of them.  But I’m not sure if that’s my favorite. I don’t know what my ultimate favorite is, but I do know what my favorite movie I’ve seen this past week. I figure that I watch so much television that I can post a weekly favorite movie [or show, whichever I feel like posting]. I recently went and saw Resident Evil: Afterlife in 3D, and I have to say, after being sucked into the franchise when the first movie came out, this one is by far my favorite of the foursome. It is by far the most entertaining movie I’ve seen for a while now… compared to the last disappointing movie I saw in theaters [Eat. Pray. Love.]. I easily get in the mood for an end-of-days movie, and my recent view of The Book of Eli didn’t quite curve my craving. Resident Evil: Afterlife, however, did just that. Milla Jovovich is one of my favorite actresses. She can do it all. From her action movies to serious thrillers. From The Fifth Element to The Fourth Kind and The Perfect Getaway she always captivates me.

In this flick, Jovovich returns as Alice, who was manufactured by the Umbrella Corporation to be the greatest military asset. The story resumes from the previous movie Extinction with returning casts like Ali Larter. After unexpectedly finding survivors atop a building in the destroyed L.A. metropolis, she attempts to rescue the people to a ship in which the team has been receiving safety broadcasts from. The story is simple. The movie is great. And the 3D affects are amazing. One spoiler though, the movie does have a cliffhanger. So I can only hope that they continue with another. According to Associated Press, this 4th installment has grossed more than the other three movies combined, so hopefully that will bring light to a fifth movie. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
